A Dietitian/Clinical Nutritionist is a health professional who is qualified to give accurate advice and information on all aspects of nutrition and diet. Dietitians/ Clinical Nutritionists apply knowledge of food, nutrition and other related disciplines such as biochemistry, physiology and social science to promote health, prevent disease and aid in the management of illness.
You may see a Dietitian/ Clinical Nutritionist in a hospital (as an inpatient or outpatient) or in the community (at a clinic or in a care centre) Dietetic services may be accessed on a public or private basis.
Dietetic services are available free of charge through the public health service. However, there may be a variation in terms of the level of availability from area to area in the Health Services Executive (HSE), depending on local resources.
If you access services privately, you will be charged for the service. However, you can reclaim costs from your private health insurance company; the amount depends on your policy. You can then claim tax relief on any outstanding fees.
You can be referred by a doctor, nurse or other health professional, or may be able to self refer. This depends on local policy and you should contact your Local Health Office or Health Centre for more information.

The Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI) is the professional organisation for Dietitians in Ireland. Founded in 1968, the Institute represents Dietitians/ Clinical Nutritionists throughout Ireland.
