Safefood - the Food Safety Promotion Board

Safefood (the Food Safety Promotion Board), is one of a number of North/South bodies set up in Ireland as a result of the Good Friday Agreement. This organisation was set up to protect and improve public health, by fostering and maintaining confidence in the food supply on the entire island of Ireland, in partnership with others.

Safefood is based in Ireland, but conducts its work on an all-island basis. This organisation reports to the North South Ministerial Council (NSMC).

What does Safefood do?

Safefood aims to to create an environment where consumers everywhere in Ireland can have confidence in the food they eat. They provide advice and guidance to the food industry and to consumers. Specifically, Safefood has responsibility for the following:

  • Promotion of food safety
  • Research into food safety
  • Communication of food alerts
  • Surveillance of foodborne diseases
  • Promotion of scientific co-operation and linkages between laboratories
  • Development of cost-effective facilities for specialist laboratory testing.
