in Ireland, a civil summons is issued to commence proceedings in the District Court. Usually a civil summons is prepared by the Plaintiff's solicitor. The stamp duty must then be paid on the civil summons and the District Court Office will write on it a date, time and place for the court hearing.
The civil summons must then be served on the Defendant. There are two ways to serve the civil summons:
A copy of the summons may be given to the Defendant personally, to the Defendant's wife or husband, child, employee or agent at his/her last known residence or workplace, as long as that person is not under 16 years of age
A copy of the summons may be sent by registered prepaid post to the Defendant's last known residence or place of business.
