Safety advice for motorcyclists in Ireland

While motorcyclists in Ireland represent less than two percent (2%) of all licensed vehicle drivers in the country, they accounted for 12% of road fatalities in Ireland during 2001. Between January - early April 2005, motorcyclists so far account for 13% of road deaths.

Motorcycling can be a safe means of transport but being aware of the various dangers on the road, your own driving style and your obligations as a road user will help to ensure that you travel safely.

As a motorcyclist in Ireland, you have certain obligations when driving your motorcycle:

• You must know the Rules of the Road and be aware of your obligations as a motorcyclist
• You are required to ensure that your motorcycle is roadworthy at all times; this includes ensuring your tyres are of correct tread depth and that all lights and reflectors are functioning correctly
• You should concentrate on driving 100% of the time, all of the time
• You should try to foresee danger on the road
• If you need to stop, you should drive at a speed that enables you to stop within the appropriate distance
• You should always maintain a safe distance between the vehicle in front of you
• You should be aware of adverse weather conditions and poor road conditions
• You should be seen at all times.
